For me, it goes much deeper than material possessions. Yes, I have all the merchandise. The books, the t-shirts, the video and audio collections, and a mean tattoo of the book cover. Those things are all surface. Anyone can collect the merchandise. It all started as a young boy growing up in Scotland. Mark Wing Davey was on the children's television show "Blue Peter" with the robot Zaphod head promoting the television series. It was captivating. Of course, I watched the series and listened to the radio drama. Then I read the books. Again, and again, and again.

After moving to the United States in 1984, all things British seemed to have been removed from my life. Except for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. To me it defines British humor. The entire book has it's tongue placed firmly in cheek. After getting the book on tape version, I began listening to it every night as I went to bed. It got to the point that I couldn't get to sleep without Douglas Adam's voice in the background. I listened to those tapes every night for over 4 years. I still do on occasion.

My greatest moment was seeing Douglas Adams do a live reading of the book in Boston. A rare opportunity just a few years before his death. The day that he died, I went and had the book cover tattooed on my arm in tribute. I have already taken the day off from work on the 29th of April to see the movie. I have never been as excited about a movie as I am this one.

So, it runs much deeper to me than just words on paper. The book is an intricate part of who I am.
