I have been a Hitchhiker fan since the tender age of 10, and I recently had the rare opportunity to objectively test my hitchhiker abilities and devotion. On the first day of my new job in my new city, I was suddenly and impertinently run over by a truck. Usually, when faced with the prospect of imminent death (or at very least extreme pain and suffering) a person's brain tends to take a little walk down memory lane perusing through all those life events that, since you won't be continuing down that path any further, it feels it needs to sum up. Of course since I am, if I may immodestly say it, a true hitchhiker, prepared for any event that might at any moment rip me from my current situation, belief system or dimension, all that crossed through my mind was "oh no, not again".

Luckily for my current physical form (I don't think I would have been suited as a bowl of petunias), I was not crushed by the truck, only sent sailing a few feet down the Bowery. I wish I could say the same for my umbrella, whom, I am sure, is enjoying a happier existence elsewhere. As I lay in the middle of the road trying to find my shoes, it occurred to me that either I was the most enormous dork ever to grace the fender of a passing truck, or I must truly be a real hoopy frood. I have chosen the latter.
